How Liquid Oxygen Systems Have Served The Medical Industry In Times Of Recent Crisis

by Cryonos Project on August 09, 2022

Liquid Oxygen has become one of the most crucial medical products since the Covid-19 pandemic took place. Since the virus can pose deadly effects on the functioning of the lungs, supplying Oxygen to those infected has become a necessity.

Apart from providing Oxygen in its original gaseous form, it can also be provided in a liquid form. This is known as Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO).

Providing Oxygen in a liquid state has its own benefits and it can also be produced using a range of methods. In the medical industry, Oxygen is one of the most important components. And in the context of India during the peaks of the ongoing pandemic, it is nothing short of a lifesaver.

Let us take a deeper look at the uses and benefits of LMO.

Why Use Oxygen In A Liquid State?

One of the biggest benefits of using Oxygen in the liquid state is in terms of storage and transportation. Since storing a gas can be quite difficult, converting it into liquids allows it to be stored in any volume required, and it can also be transported using regular means.

Cryogenics plays an important role in this process. Oxygen is gaseous at room temperature, so it needs to be converted to liquid form with the help of cryogenic devices.

Transporting oxygen in gaseous form is an extremely difficult process. Using cryogenics tanks it can be transported with ease, and disruptions in the supply chain are less likely. Hospitals and other medical facilities can also use cryogenic storage to store ample amounts of Oxygen to deal with crisis situations.

Cryogenic systems can also be set up on-site for many medical facilities, allowing large volumes of Oxygen to be produced and stored without hassle.

Cryogenic storage components have been a huge part of the medical revolution. Apart from storing oxygen, they are used for a wide variety of purposes such as storing organs, tissues, and also Covid 19 vaccines.

Liquid Oxygen Is A Lifesaver During Covid-19

Towards the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Oxygen was in short supply across India. The increase in demand was from 700 MT of Oxygen per day to more than 3000MT per day and went up to almost 9000MT per day.

This demand was almost impossible to meet with regular Oxygen supplies running short. The lack of proper transportation methods also added to the crisis situation. Liquid Oxygen was the only way that this demand could be partially met.

Since liquid Oxygen is relatively easy to transport, it could be provided across the country seamlessly. Many hospitals in highly infected areas were also fitted with cryogenic systems so that they could produce liquid oxygen on-site.

Why Does The Indian Cryogenics Industry Need To Develop Rapidly?

India is one of the worst affected countries by the Covid-19 pandemic. It can be gauged that in the near future such crisis situations may arise again. With the help of the cryogenics industry, liquid medical Oxygen can become easily available to medical organizations big and small.

If we are to imagine an India that truly never falls short of Oxygen, cryogenics is the only way forward. With the help of cryogenic containers and other machinery, India can be made into a Covid-19-ready country where not a single person suffers from an Oxygen shortage.
