Using extreme cold as a treatment method may seem like straight out of a sci-fi movie.

But did you know that such a treatment method existed?

Yes. That’s right! It is known as cryotherapy, where doctors use extreme cold to remove abnormal tissues by freezing them.  Argon or Nitrogen gasses are the commonly used gasses in this procedure.

Although in its nascent stage, Cryotherapy has a wide range of applications such as treating skin diseases, inflammation, and even some types of cancer.

Are you curious to know more about Cryotherapy and its applications?

Then dive right in!

How Safe Is Cryotherapy And What Should You Expect?

Since this method of treatment is somewhat new, its full range of benefits is yet to be discovered.

The most common type of cryotherapy is a 3-5 minute bath in a cryotherapy booth. Cryotherapy facials are also gaining popularity and involve applying cold only to the face. Some clinics use a cryotherapy wand to treat joint pain.

Cryotherapy usually refers to entire-body-cryotherapy and is usually done in a non-medical setting, such as a spa.

On the other hand, doctors use cryotherapy to freeze cancerous cells and warts.

People usually say that cryotherapy has an unpleasant beginning and gets better with time, this is because your body takes some time to get adjusted to the low temperature.

For most people Cryotherapy is safe, however consulting a doctor is always advised.

Children, High BP individuals, people with heart problems, and Pregnant women are usually not recommended to get Cryotherapy.

Since Cryotherapy uses very low temperatures, anything more than a few minutes could prove fatal.

Benefits Of Cryotherapy

Although much is yet to be discovered, the following are some of the established benefits of Cryotherapy.

  1. Muscle Recovery And Pain Relief

One of the main reasons why most people opt for Cryotherapy is due to its quick action in alleviating muscle pain and joint stiffness by improving blood circulation. That’s why you see your favorite athletes taking a dip in an ice bath after matches.

  1. Weight Loss

We hate to break it to you, but Cryotherapy is not the magical solution to get rid of fat quickly. However, it can support weight loss by forcing your body to stay warmer, which burns tons of calories.

  1. Reducing Inflammation

Your body’s immune system fights infection by inflaming the affected cells. Chronic inflammation is your body overreacting to the infection, which may cause diseases such as arthritis, dementia, depression, diabetes, and even cancer.

With the application of cold temperatures, your body slowly reduces inflammation and returns to its normal state.

  1. Preventing And Managing Dementia

Another benefit of Cryotherapy is its use in preventing and controlling the progress of Dementia. It also helps in reducing mild cognitive impairment, stress-related to dementia, and other cognitive diseases that come with age.

  1. Cancer Treatment

Although evidence supporting the use of cryotherapy for cancer is limited, due to its effect on inflammation, doctors and scientists are considering the application of Cryotherapy for treating and even preventing cancer in some cases.

  1. Reducing Depression And Anxiety

A few initial studies show that Cryotherapy can be used as a reliable treatment strategy for combating depression and improving mental health.

  1. Mitigating Eczema Symptoms

Eczema is a chronic skin condition caused by inflammation and can lead to the formation of itchy spots of dry skin. Many patients who’ve tried Cryotherapy as a treatment for Eczema, have seen considerable improvements in their conditions.

  1. Alleviating Migraine Headaches

Using focused cryotherapy on the neck, many people have reported ease from migraines and their recurring episodes.

What You Should Know?

Many anecdotal pieces of evidence tip the balance in favor of cryotherapy. Several studies have successfully found Cryotherapy’s application to treat a wide variety of health-related problems such as aging skin, weight loss, and preventing and controlling chronic diseases among others.

Without support from further studies, it is not possible to conclusively declare Cryotherapy as a definitive treatment method.
