24 terms, explained briefly.

From ADR to vapour phase — each term in one or two sentences, with a link to where it matters.

ADR

Transport & logistics

European agreement on the carriage of dangerous goods by road. In our range, all vessels up to 10 litres and the T models are approved under ADR.

Learn more

Canister

Products & buying advice

Cylindrical holder inside the vessel. Short canisters are primarily intended for straw storage, while long canisters each hold two goblets and are suitable for both straws and cryovials.

Learn more

Cryobox

Handling & practice

Box for storing cryovials, placed in racks. Among the vessels, rack systems are only available in the -B versions of the AC 2XL and AC 3XL series (including AC 2XL50T-B), as well as a rack storage system for the AC BIO 430, AC BIO 860 and AC SYS 480 with frame freezers, and for the AC DS10-B, DS15-B and DS25-B dry shippers.

Learn more

Cryopreservation

Cryo basics & knowledge

Preserving cells, tissue or other biological material at very low temperatures, typically in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C.

Learn more

Cryovial

Handling & practice

Small screw-cap tube for samples, typically 1–5 ml. Stored in canisters or in cryoboxes on racks.

Learn more

Dewar

Cryo basics & knowledge

Vacuum-insulated vessel for storing cryogenic liquids such as liquid nitrogen.

Learn more

Dry shipper

Transport & logistics

Transport vessel in which an absorbent material binds the liquid nitrogen. Spill-proof. Under IATA the dry shipper is not classified as dangerous goods, because there is no free liquid nitrogen in the vessel.

Learn more

Evaporation rate

Cryo basics & knowledge

Daily loss of liquid nitrogen at rest, in litres per day. The largest item in the running costs of a vessel.

Learn more

Holding time

Cryo basics & knowledge

How long a vessel holds its temperature without refilling. Roughly capacity divided by evaporation rate — plan with a reserve.

Learn more

Liquid cylinder

Products & buying advice

Pressure vessel for storing and dispensing liquid nitrogen, with liquid or gaseous withdrawal.

Learn more

LN₂

Cryo basics & knowledge

Liquid nitrogen. Boils at −196 °C at atmospheric pressure.

MDR

Safety & regulations

EU Medical Device Regulation 2017/745.

Micro bulk

Products & buying advice

Larger on-site tank for supplying liquid nitrogen to several consumers.

Learn more

Neck opening

Products & buying advice

Diameter of the vessel opening. Narrow neck openings hold the cold longest.

Learn more

PED

Safety & regulations

Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU.

Learn more

Phase separator

Handling & practice

Prevents uncontrolled splashing when dispensing liquid nitrogen by separating the liquid from the gas.

Learn more

PPE

Safety & regulations

Personal protective equipment for handling cryogenic liquids: cryogenic gloves, face protection, aprons.

Learn more

Rack

Handling & practice

Frame that holds cryoboxes inside the vessel.

Learn more

Straw

Handling & practice

Thin tube (0.25 or 0.5 ml) for storing semen and embryos, typically in canisters.

Super-insulation

Cryo basics & knowledge

Multi-layer reflective insulation inside the vacuum space that keeps radiant heat out.

Learn more

TPED

Safety & regulations

Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive 2010/35/EU.

Learn more

TÜV

Safety & regulations

German technical inspection body. Five-year interval including TÜV — by us or a licensed regional partner.

Learn more

Vacuum

Cryo basics & knowledge

High vacuum between inner and outer vessel. It almost entirely stops heat conduction. Auguste Cryogenics gives a five-year warranty on it.

Learn more

Vapour phase

Handling & practice

Storage in the cold nitrogen vapour above the liquid, instead of submerged in it.
